And then the hormones that tell us that we're full, we have lots of those.
So we don't eat as well.
In addition to that, we have a change in our sense of taste and smell.
So food is not as palatable to us as we get older.
And then older people, some of them lose their teeth.
They're living alone, their loneliness, they're taking medications.
So all of these things.
And what happens when we don't eat enough?
We lose weight.
And what do we lose?
We lose the one thing we don't want to lose.
And that's our muscle, our skeletal muscle.
So taking protein is extremely important.
And obviously, along with some form of resistance exercise.
But protein is very important.
That's the first thing.
That's our appetite.
Ideally is to take it in your diet if you can, but if our appetite is being suppressed, it's important that we take it in some form, whether it's a powder or a liquid form.
It's normally recommended that we get about 0.8 grams per kilogram.
I would suggest probably 1.2 for an older person and take it maybe four times throughout the day to maintain the muscle that we have.
