I'd love to just get you to give the listeners

a little bit of your own personal background and kind of how you started out in business, if that's okay.

I remember the business so well, Brian.

I didn't know you at the time, but it was a super successful business and as you say, kind of pretty pretty innovative and and one of the first businesses of its type.

Great story.

I uh I guess the one obvious question is you were thinking about greater purpose and and you know, you you mentioned you started in Laura.

I I can't believe that kind of private equity wasn't a kind of calling somewhere on that uh on that that mission, right?

Yeah.

Well

But with that, I think uh I think that's uh an opportune time to turn to the kind of first real question about the main purpose of this kind of podcast.

So I guess could you talk us through, talk the listeners through what does purpose mean to you?

And what role do you think that actually has in a what is ultimately a commercial and kind of for profit tech or software business?

Absolutely and completely agree with you.

I um I know you and I have discussed in the past and it's uh just a slight diversion here, but yeah, I got into private equity in uh in nineteen ninety.

And I distinctly remember kind of the first couple of investments I made.

You know, frankly, we bought a business and we had what euphemistically called some synergy benefit, which was essentially kind of increasing profits and we sold the businesses for good returns for our investors.

But I do remember kind of like two or three years in.

getting home, talking to my wife and saying, you know, as an engineer, which I am

If I kind of cast this forward and keep repeating this over a decade or as it turned out to be kind of nearly thirty years, I it it it doesn't feel like a great place to gonna be.
