And so in a certain way I'm reserving the term knowledge, strictly speaking, for the case in which I actually draw the conclusion and so don't miss the meaning, or at least if I do miss the meaning it's because I intentionally blow it off.

And I want to say in the other sorts of case where you know in this weaker sense, I want to say you're in a position to know.

Although you haven't yet actually acquired the information.

I actually wanna be a little bit careful about that kind of talk.

There is a sense in which I think that that's right.

But I there's a broader sense of being in a position to know that doesn't always carry that implication of responsibility.

And so this kind of thing comes up also in perception.

There's a way in which visual perception, for example, makes available to you all kinds of knowledge that you don't actually acquire.

You might be sitting in a coffee shop on Monday and uh

talking to someone in the in the background there was a case full of drinks.

And one of the pieces of knowledge that was made available to me the whole time I was sitting there was that there were three different kinds of water on the third shelf down, like three different flavors.

That was something that as soon as I looked at it and thought about it, I could come to now instantly.

And furthermore, th those cans of water were in my visual field the entire time.

And so in some sense I was in a position to know that there were three different flavors of water on that shelf for like an hour before I actually came to know that.

But it seems like we only want to blame me for failing to acquire that knowledge where it was actually relevant to something.

In this case it definitely wasn't.

In some sense of attending, I don't know that it necessarily takes a lot of effort to
