Up until now, he has concentrated his investment in the downtown area.
He started doing this kind of at a really difficult time for Detroit.
The city filed bankruptcy in 2013.
There was little investment to speak of.
And kind of thanks to his investment, he has made it a rather vibrant part of the city.
It is somewhat controversial in the sense that a lot of Dan Gilbert's projects have received some form of public subsidy.
And there is some debate about whether...
those subsidies would be better suited going to parts of the city that need them more.
When this project was proposed, Dan Gilbert and Bedrock were seeking an expansion of a state tax credit program.
There was resistance from some political leaders in the state.
to giving state subsidies for this kind of project, people talking about corporate giveaways.
But in the end, Bedrock and Gilbert were really successful in convincing officials of their vision for the riverfront and how that can kind of draw young, talented, educated people and the economic revitalization that comes with them to Detroit.
So what he wants to do is he wants to take down two buildings in the Renaissance Center, which is the seven skyscraper complex that has defined Detroit's skyline for decades.
And he wants to install a riverfront park, an entertainment district, and new housing as well.
And the idea is that this is kind of the phase two of his strategy to remake Detroit.
