Like, why do I still at 39 carry the bad feelings of shame that I had from like, I remember being 16, like wanting to be the best person that I could be and thinking like, I better not tell anyone this.
This is not going to get me any credibility in the schoolyard.
And yeah, I love to be the unlocker of the, to give people permission to be unashamedly ambitious.
That's the best thing about this job.
I remember going to a new school in grade five and someone just saying to me, oh, you're a square.
I remember thinking, I'm not sure what that means.
It doesn't sound like it's a positive.
And yeah, it was just like I always try my best at sport.
I always try my best academically.
Like I just was a striver.
And I think there's a part of Australian culture and maybe Queensland culture.
Apologies to anyone who's in Queensland, but definitely it was stronger in Queensland for me than it was anywhere else.
The tall poppy syndrome is alive and well.
And yeah, you don't want to stick your head up too high.
Yeah, and I think in the startup bubble, and I acknowledge that I do live in a startup bubble, the tall pit poppy syndrome has ceased to exist.
There's a genuine joy in the success of others, I think, because we know that Atlassian makes startups a genuine career choice for thousands of kids coming out of high school, and then Canva proves that Atlassian wasn't a fluke, and then the next 10 years should hold another...
3, 5, 10 YCN Canva sized success stories for us to continue to perpetuate the startup ecosystem in Australia.
And I know the startup, I know that tall poppy syndrome exists, but it doesn't exist in the world I exist in.
