After what to those two felt like an eternity, and to the fitness-focused Kenny and Amanda, a brief stroll in the woods, the party arrived at a flat clearing along the mountainside.
Upon it sat several small cabins and a pair of central bungalows.
Dotted around the property, a series of fire pits sat either burning or smoldering.
As they approached, the group was met by a small man in an elaborate hat, wearing a colorful weaved set of silk-laden linens.
He bore a broad and warm smile as he reached out to greet each person individually, shaking their hands and welcoming them to the retreat.
For the life of him, no matter how many times he heard the name repeated, Tim could never commit the correct pronunciation to memory.
Hello, the shaman said, clasping Tim's hands together.
Welcome to Refugio Tranquilo.
It is, the shaman trailed off, momentarily as his eyes locked with Tim's.
Um, lo siento.
It is a pleasure to have you join us.
The older man's gaze lingered on Tim a moment, with a slight hint of curiosity before moving on to Dan, who stood beside him and offering the same greeting.
As he made his way down the line of Tim's friends, Tim could have sworn he caught old Shaman, sparing at least one sideways glance to him before returning to his duties.
Chalking it up to exhaustion and perhaps latent egotism, Tim disregarded this oddity and returned to silently wishing he had been led to a place to drop his gear and have a rest.
Though the more athletic companions he had arrived with and been joined by seemed rejuvenated by the upward walk through the jungle, Tim felt his knees and ankles ache mercilessly.
At last, the words he had been waiting for were announced to the group.
Please head on your side to the main building where you might rest and take some water, the shaman announced as each of the travelers plucked up their dropped backpacks and gear and proceeded in single file lines into the larger of the two central bungalows.
They were simple structures, much akin to those found at American campgrounds, with basic brown wooden frames and bug screens covering the open windows which lined the structure from end to end.
Within the larger bungalow, rows of simple, single-sized mattresses lined the floor, made up with soft white linens, and each with a single pillow at their end.
The place simply radiated serenity and calm, and even despite Tim and Dan's respective fatigue from the hike, they were clearly ill-prepared for it.
