Excited though he was, it would have been a lie to claim there was an element of nervousness behind it all.
Excited nerves, but nerves all the same.
Minutes passed.
His friends joined him by the fire, all exuding the same excitement and curiosity as Tim.
Idle conversations began and ended.
Dan's face in particular remained slightly contorted as if the still bitter fountains taunted his tongue and sinuses.
The minutes continued on, soon leading to first to a half hour lapsing, then an hour, all with nothing happening.
Then, just a hair over seventy minutes since Tim had first sat down by the fire, he felt something odd within his mind.
He couldn't quite describe it, if pressed, but whatever it was, it was gaining power and volume.
Then, everything went black.
Tim woke up in his cabin.
He had no recollection of how or when, but he had clearly made it back to bed at some point.
Looking around, he realized quite quickly that he was alone, as he had planned for taking a solo cabin as he had.
Looking out the window, he saw the night sky was still above, emblazoned with millions upon millions of stars visible only in those remote places free from urban light pollution.
Though very beautiful, they were also quite real, with no visible hints of being a hallucination.
In point of fact, beyond not feeling as though he were any form of high or dripping, Tim felt remarkably awakened and refreshed, as though he had slept his deepest sleep ever.
Looking at his watch, he saw that some six hours had indeed passed since the ceremony had taken place, and yet despite his best efforts, he could recall nothing from the experience afterwards.
Not even in the manner of a blackout, but rather there existed, it felt, a void in his recent memory, as though he'd ceased to be altogether until waking on his cot.
The sensation was actually curiously familiar, reminding him of the one time he'd undergone surgery and was put under general anesthesia.
The deep and dreamless sleep of such going beyond mere sleep, and serving almost like an off button for his conscious mind.
