The day that I quit, I was out to dinner with my boss and this had been kind of on my mind for months, really, because I was building the shoe business on the side from this corporate gig. I was out to dinner with my boss and I'm like, okay, this is the day. I'm going to break in the news. I'm out of here. I'm going to get my notice.
As you're creating every piece of content, think, okay, how is somebody going to discover this? Usually it's going to be Google. Usually it's going to be Pinterest. But thinking of these user-to-content platforms, that's a term from Rosemary Groner who runs TheBusyBudgeter.com. It's like a personal finance budgeting site that's gone crazy. How are people going to discover this?
It still took me a couple beers deep into this dinner to build up the nerve to do it. Because it's like, is that allowed? Can I cut my own paycheck? I went to school. I have these obligations. Is this actually going to work? And I had several months of earnings history at that point. So it wasn't completely...
And if it has some nonsensical, clever title that only makes sense to you, probably nobody's going to click on that. Probably nobody's going to come and read that. And it's like you're going to pour your heart out. You're going to pour hours into creating this stuff. Make sure that you're setting yourself up for success.

And it was still super scary. But after I told him it was like this huge weight off my shoulders and it just like, okay, this is real. Like, let's go, let's go do this.
It's something that somebody is looking for and you're giving them the best chance to find it.
I would say once you have at least six months of earnings history to cover your expenses from the side business. So you're not jumping without a parachute. You've got something that you know is working and you think you can get to the next level if you're going to free up some time.

You're one layoff away or one bad meeting away from having your income go to zero. That's a really stressful way to live. The realm of potential side hustles has expanded in the last 10 years.
It has improved certain processes. It's made things more efficient. But you know, an entrepreneur is somebody who jumps off the cliff and figures out how to build their parachute on the way down. What side hustles allow you to do is just reduce the height of the cliff. Even if you don't have a side hustle, even if you don't have a business, you are the CEO of your own life.

It was one of these things where I think you reached out, whatever that was, 2017, 2018. And it's like, this girl's a go-getter. You know, she's going places. You know, want to watch this journey. And it's been really inspiring to see what you built starting as a side project and into this media behemoth conglomerate that you've got going on now.
Yeah, I don't think it's a new concept by any means. I think previous generations would have called it moonlighting or having a second job. And it might have looked like bartending on the weekends or delivering pizzas or having a rental property.
