In the Eastern Roman Empire, there were castrated courtiers who were somewhat privileged, and it wasn't unheard of men to castrate themselves to gain access to this social layer.
There's also early Christians who practiced castration based on a sort of peculiar understanding of scripture.
That's known by the way as voluntary religious castration, and it pops up again.
In the eighteenth century in Russia under the Skopsey sect.

The castrati were boys who were castrated to maintain boyish voices, but these were
prepubescent children, so I don't think we can really say that they were doing it voluntarily.
