So the way a lot of... I lived in... Before coming back to New Zealand five years ago, I lived in the US for 12 years.
And one of the words I would constantly hear over there, whether it was in sports or business, was grinding.
So they're really into grinding.
And grinding was like, get there really early, stay really late.
And those were the heroes.
And then just all day long, push, push, push, push, grinding culture.
And...
grinding's quite good early in your career when you don't have many other responsibilities you've got tons of energy the jobs are not too big and so you just push hard and hard grinding is just constantly on at one pace whereas what we found is
Over time, particularly as people's jobs get bigger and new technologies flooding into the workplace, grinding burns people out.
It grinds people down and then burns them out.
And when we studied the people who were the best sustainable performers, really high performers who kept growing but did it for decades, they didn't grind.
They did the opposite.
They pulsed.

Nature, it's got a rhythm to it.
Our heart expands, our heart contracts.
We breathe in, we breathe out.
The sun rises, the sun sets.
Nature's continually pulsing and it doesn't get tired.
