Well yes, it is confusing.
It's confusing to doctors and patients.
Uh often people are actually misclassified as having gastroesophageal reflux disease when actually they've got functional dyspepsia.
So these people present with typically feeling full, uncomfortable, bloated after you eat.
sometimes you can't finish a normal size meal and you may have some pain or even burning in that uh below the sternal area.
And those symptoms are very, very common in the general population.
And as you've said, up to ten percent of Australians actually have this
condition which can in some people really impact on their quality of life.
Why is it called functional dyspepsia?
Well it's called functional because people have attributed this to a disorder of gut function or to in fact a disorder that's not related to the gut but is uh a psychological problem.
And in fact, many people with this condition are anxious.

So an endoscopy, for example, will be normal and that can be a useful test to rule out other causes, but it certainly isn't abnormal when you look.
