uh d down the endoscope, the the mucosa, the the lining of the of of the stomach and the duodenum, the upper part of the small intestine, all looks normal.

And other tests, radiological tests, blood tests, they're normal too.

But what's really interesting is we found there's a substantial group of people with this condition and in fact their gut isn't normal.

In what way?

So we found uh and this was several years ago now, uh that there's a a significant group of people, in fact most people who have this fullness or inability to finish a normal size meal, they have some inflammation in the upper part of the small intestine in what's called the duodenum.

And this inflammation is a particular type.

It's an allergic inflammation.

characterized by what we call eosinophils, which are cells that come about when you have an allergic type reaction.

And this has now been confirmed around the world, and what's more this inflammation appears to be a significant driver of symptoms, of changes in upper gut function, and also of a number of other manifestations of this common disorder.

Well it's interesting.

There are also people with this complex of symptoms who do have Helicobacter, and a small number of them will respond if you eradicate or eliminate the Helicobacter infection.

That appears to be a different group.

to the group who get this intestinal inflammation.

Interestingly they often do.

So many of these people will report alert allergies as well, which hasn't been recognized until recently to be linked to functional dyspepsia, but we've shown in fact

there's a clear increase of those allergic disorders in people who also have functional dyspepsia.

And what's so interesting about this is this allergic inflammation in the guts also linked to anxiety.

And we found, for example, there are circulating factors that probably arise from the inflammation that are linked to the anxiety that people feel.
