And what's more it's much easier to manipulate the gut than the brain and to treat the gut problem than the brain problem.
So in fact we may be able to relieve anxiety in some people by changing the gut.
In what way?
Well, for example, with those people who have inflammation, we may be able to dampen that down with drugs that either stabilize the the the cells, the inflammatory cells that are there and we have such drugs, or actually suppress the inflammation directly with topical agents such as topical steroids, which we're currently testing in a clinical trial.
So in children there's been a randomized trial of Monty Leucast, which is a drug for asthma, which also stabilizes eosinophils in the gut, and it appeared to be better than placebo.
It's one trial, it hasn't been replicated, so
But my goodness, it's fascinating and it fits our duodenal asthma hypothesis, if you like, for the cause and indeed the long term management of functional dyspepsia.
So so clearly there are some red flags or alarm features that are important for the GP to know about and also for patients to know about.
So if you've got this new onset of these symptoms, if these symptoms begin when you're older, say you're over fifty five and the symptoms begin for the very first time
Well, you probably do need to see your GP and the GP will need to consider some investigations in that setting.
If you're losing weight, that's also an alarm feature or red flag.
If you're having trouble swallowing, if you've got vomiting, vomiting's unusual in the setting of functional dyspepsia, and there are other possibilities that need to be considered.
They're the sorts of red flags.
And even though you can't finish your
interesting.
In some people, in a small number, they do lose weight actually.
Most people do not.
They maintain their weight.
But actually ha having functional dyspepsia seems to protect you from obesity.
