I'm outgoing as a person, so I was able to make friends.
I had this community of young people who were so encouraging around me, but it was so enormously hard.
I remember thinking, God, because you question everything.
So you start questioning.
I'm like, did I make a mistake leaving India and saying this is my calling and I have to be here and do this?
Were my parents right?
The most troubling question of all.
Were my parents right?
And have I made a tremendous error?
And there was, I think, a whole year where I went to sleep every night thinking this.
And keeping on going through that was literally day by day.
Get up every morning, have this routine, go to school, come back, write anyway.
Write for yourself because no one else is reading.
And the void...
teaches you so much as a writer because no one is looking at it you're doing it only for you which is why now when i talk to young people about writing i'm like enjoy the void enjoy it um because once you get into deadlines there's someone waiting for it always at the other end whereas no one is waiting for it which means you can do anything yes yeah

your laurels for that moment well done thank you so much I um I think I was it was such a surreal experience because I was in a cab heading back after having dinner with a lovely friend and my editor emails me because obviously different time zones and she was like I didn't think I was going to hit the list at all and then she emails me and she goes my god you're number one and I was like
No, stop joking with me.
