It's not even that we get necessarily pings and dings and rings, it's that we're prompting ourselves.
Why?
It's out of habit.
So when I looked around and I said, okay, well, where is there a book on how to build habit forming products?
I didn't find one.
So I decided to start researching it myself.
So I lived in Silicon Valley at the time and I talked to former clients and colleagues and different folks in Silicon Valley and stole
Their secrets so that it's not just the social media companies and the video gaming companies that use these techniques.
The idea is that anybody can use them to build it more engaging, stickier products for good.
So products in EdTech, for example, like Kahoot use the hook model to get kids hooked onto learning.
Fitbod uses the hook model to get people hooked onto exercise.Anywhere where you need customers to come back frequently.
frequently out of habit, you can use the psychology of behavioral design to do that.
So that was the genesis of Hook.
Kind of.
I didn't I didn't really know that this was a profession.
Like I didn't know how to do I just self published actually my first book hooked, I just self published it.
My wife designed the cover, we put it out in a PDF, we slapped it up onto Amazon and started selling it.
And then it was after we got like a hundred reviews that I got a call from my agent who's still my agent today, Christy Fletcher.
Sixteen, seventeen years later, we're still working together and she said, Hey, I saw your book's getting really good reviews on Amazon.
