It was simply a situation that I had no control over.
Very dangerous.
I'll come back to that in a moment because it's important to note here as well.
It's not easy when you start out that journey.
because your shame, your level of shame is so, so acute.
And you look at family and you want to make amends and you want to make up for the many years that you've hurt them.
And also, you know, you might be in company and without thinking, somebody in that company will say, Asher, did you see so-and-so?
Ah, but you wouldn't mind, they're an alcoholic.
You know, that kind of negativity around being an addict in any form in Ireland still prevails.
The stigma.
Well...
I was lucky in that sobriety came because of that very painful experience with my niece.
And my determination was thus that nothing was going to in any way impede my journey and the journey I wanted to make to full sobriety.
It certainly took four or five years for me to overcome the guilt and the shame.
It took another couple of years for me to be able to look people in the eye and try to say to them that there is life after alcohol, there is life after addiction, that you can sort of have a wonderful career and a good life.
And you have to just draw kind of lines in the sand and say,
If I am going out tonight to join my family, I have to join them right from the word go.
There's no point in me going in when they've been there for a couple of hours, having a glass of wine, because they are on a different sort of planet completely to what I am.
You know, you have to join with them and that rising tide will lift you with them.
There is life in the sparkling water or the tonic water.
