There are already companies touting cheap gene mapping to the public.
And no doubt many people are tempted to look into their genetic crystal ball to avoid yet unseen landmines.
But there are many issues, not the least of which are mistakes in the analysis.

Have you dealt with the ethical issue that you might find families which subsequently find it difficult to find life insurance because you find a genetic abnormality which is in the family and they've got to declare it?

But before that, let's stay with genome wide associations and go to the far north of Scotland, to the Orkney Islands, where doctor Jim Wilson has been studying his relatives and finding genes linked to sleep and marauding Vikings.
Jim Wilson is in the Department of Population and Disease Genetics at the University of Edinburgh.
Why did you decide to study them genetically?
The people you grew up with?
When you've got an isolated population like that, you're also exposed to what's called the founder effect.
One of these Norse Vikings who got off one of these wooden boats might have had some really odd genetic problem, which then spread through the Arcadian population.
In fact, that's what happened in Tasmania with Huntington's disease.
You can get quite major errors occurring or errors of assumptions because somebody just got off a boat with a funny disorder.
The French population in Quebec is another.

And you've also found some genetic association related to getting off to sleep.
