Complaints commissioners go by various names in different states and have been around for over twenty five years in Australia.
So if anyone has an idea of what makes a bad doctor, it's these people.
Ron Patterson was the go to person with a healthcare complaint in New Zealand for around ten years.
His job title was Health and Disability Commissioner.
He's now professor of health law and policy at the University of Auckland.
Ron Patterson has just published a book where he's extrapolated his negative experiences to the positive, aiming to inform consumers about what makes a good doctor.
I spoke to him via Skype.
Ron Paterson, welcome to the Health Report.
Let's just start you've got this tongue in cheek poem towards the end of your book, and rather than me reading it, I reckon you should read it.
A New Zealand doctor wrote it.
Mm-hmm.

Uh really, that sums up the book.
Communication is the heart of a lot of the problems.
So when people are surveyed and asked what they expect of their doctors, where do these things rate?
Because there was a fascinating study of women with breast cancer rating their oncologists, their cancer specialists.
