of all these kind of project management tools, whatnot, just keep a note or post it next to your desk saying, okay, this additional test came down, I gave it to employee B, this additional test came down, I gave it to employee B again, then you start to see the pattern.

Another trick is to batch in your task assignments.

A lot of times, this type of additional task comes one at a time, so it is really hard to batch those things.

But if you can think of it in a bigger scheme of things and add a batch, it helps you to have a little more equitable task allocation.

So when feasible, grouping related decisions together helps.

Lastly, you can reconsider your beliefs about burnout.

So one of the assumptions that the managers made was that because these intrinsically motivated employees pour themselves into work, they're shielded from burning out.

But that is not true.

These employees who love their jobs have limits.

So loving one's job doesn't create immunity to burnout, and remembering that helps managers to be more equitable.

Well, that is actually another really good question.

And that actually is the follow-up research that I'm working on currently.

I don't want to put the burden on the person, the go-to person, the highly intrinsically motivated person, because saying no needs courage.

You don't want to say no, especially to your manager.

But there could be ways that you can bring up this conversation in a more productive way.

Say something like, yes, you might have sensed that I'm really intrinsically motivated to work on this client presentation preparation, but I'm not really intrinsically motivated in this paper filing task.

Or say something like, my time would be better spent on the task that I enjoy doing, which I also do a good job at.

So maybe you'll want to find someone else for this.
