I love those kind of John le Carré, very stylish, very cold sort of thrillers, beautifully constructed like clockwork.

And I loved the idea as a challenge, almost, of writing something like that.

So that was something I'd sort of play with in my head.

Like, where would I set it?

What country would it be?

Would it be in England?

What kind of people?

What kind of period?

And at the same time, I was writing The Garden Against Time.

I'd planned to put Pasolini in it.

He was in the proposal, and he didn't fit.

this has happened to me lots of times.

Like, Franco Hara didn't fit in The Lonely City.

There's always somebody that, like, I can't shoehorn them in.

And sometimes I let go, but with Pasolini,
