I just sort of stayed really interested.
It was the pandemic.
I was watching a lot of Pasolini films in that way that you did then of kind of a deep dive through somebody's work.
And I'd started reading about his murder and I'd come across this story about how some reels were stolen from his final film cello and they were potentially used to lure him to the place where he was murdered.
So I thought that's a really interesting story.
And then I realised that reels had been stolen from some other films that were being made at the same time, including Fellini's Casanova.
So that's really interesting.
And then I realized that the same crew had worked on both films and that they were made at Cinecittà, the Roman film studio.
And suddenly I was like, wait, this is a mystery.
It's got a setting and it's got a cast kind of ready-made.
What would happen if I inserted a fictional other into that world and let that whole drama sort of unfold, but almost at the periphery of their gaze?
So that sort of simmered away for a while.
And then I was in Venice.
I'd got interested in Donati because I knew he was one of the people who had been on both films.
And I literally, this sounds so daft, but I literally had a vision as I was leaving the city of Donati meeting this redheaded, beautiful English boy who was sitting on the steps of the church, San Vidal, which is just before Academia Bridge, if you know Venice.
just this sort of eye contact, intense coup de foudre between two people that would bring absolute chaos in its wake.
And that was like, okay, I've got, this is it, I've got it.

And it starts with that moment of eye contact.
