What happened on that day?
It does feel like a lifetime ago and certainly a time where a lot of us were kind of a little bit blissfully unaware of perhaps what was to come.
But um on January twenty five we know that coronavirus was already kind of beginning to take hold and it was actually that day that the very first case of COVID was confirmed in Australia in Melbourne.
So we had a guy who flew in from Wuhan in China to visit his family um and touched down in Melbourne on january nineteenth.
He started to feel unwell after he got off the plane, so he arranged to see a GP here, um and did all the right things.
He called ahead, he wore a mask and he went there, but he was actually sent home.
He wasn't tested.
Um, this was kind of pretty, you know, in the early days of the epidemic.
And then the next day he felt worse, so his family took him to Monash Medical Centre, which is a hospital in Melbourne South East, and there he was isolated and tested and later confirmed to have COVID.
So he was our first case, but what's kind of remarkable about it is that he didn't spread the virus onto anyone else.
He was actually incredibly diligent as his family was because of what was going on in Wuhan.
And so they, you know, isolated him, they called ahead, wore masks, all those kinds of things.
And then when the team at Monash did contact tracing, they found that he hadn't spread it onto anyone else.
Well, exactly.
He was our he was our first kind of case, but he he didn't create any onwards transmission.
And we kind of learn in the series that that's not unusual.
