You have this huge expense that's going to come at the beginning of the month.
We all know it's rent, and it might be like most of your paycheck, if not all of it.
And then all of a sudden you're left with almost nothing.
And so that's the first thing is actually knowing that number and then knowing how much comes in every month and calculating how much you've committed yourself to in bills.
So that means any recurring monthly expense from your rent to your utilities to your Netflix subscriptions, your Hulu subscriptions, all of those kinds of things.
And knowing what that number is compared to how much is coming in.
The thing that I encourage clients to do
is to know what the due date of their bills is.
So to know exactly when those come out and to figure out if your month is lopsided compared to what the paychecks are.
So for instance, in the first half of the month, is there a way to one, shift some of the due dates to some of the bills to the second half of the month, figure out what half your rent is, and to save
that amount from your second paycheck so that by the next month, not all of your paycheck is going towards rent.
You already saved for half of it.
And that can help also even things out so it doesn't feel like feast or famine every two weeks.
So once you have that bills number, then it's all of the I want to say intangible things, right?
It's yes, you have to go grocery shopping.
Yes, you're going to need new clothes once in a while and new shoes.
And maybe you want to get a pedicure and maybe you want to go to the movies and all of those things.
I like to call that like your discretionary spending.
So you have your bills, which is over here.
Those are your basics.
