Um there is uh a final bill reading, so a law is gonna be passed today for the descendants of uh Doihu.
So that's top of the South Island.
who have now got this agreement for uh about four hundred and twenty million dollars in compensation and around three thousand hectares of land to be given back
and to be given to them.
So this is the Nelson Nelson Tents agreement.
So it's a a story that still a lot of people don't know about it.
It was ended up being the longest litigation or longest running uh private property dispute in New Zealand's history.
The key thing about this is it was never a Waitangi tribunal claim.
So this is a private property case.
And so what happened?
was going back to nineteen uh eighteen thirty nine, eighteen forty, uh the the uh the Iwi around the top of the uh South Island signed a deal with the New Zealand company
They wanted to share in the prosperity of the settlers coming.
Um, and so where they said, okay, we will sell you this land, but we want reserved for us one tenth of all the land.
They actually even drew up a map of Nelson City and they had, you know, different colors for different things and the green one was for uh for the Māori.
And you could see where the Māori properties were meant to be.
Um, that never happened.
They they signed the agreement and and they'd gone to some some legs.
So this was a thriving Maori community anyway.
They were already trading with Australia.
They were had boats that were going, ships going across trading with Australia.
