Obviously, with retrospect, you look back at some of the things that have happened.

I mean, I was...

One of the, you know, was the first New Zealand journalist into Baghdad during the Iraq war and reported that there were no weapons of mass destruction.

And that was a really important part of the war on terror, which followed 9-11, because we didn't sign up to that as a nation.

You know, we didn't join the so-called Coalition of the Willing.

And so our perspective of that conflict was quite different.

But...

It's very hard, you know, it's very hard.

You're in a small environment, you know, you're getting bombarded with propaganda all the time, trying to pick out what is true and what's not.

It came down to contacts, you know, within the military.

Also the fact, and I'll be really honest here, because of the TV3 budget, we were

We were never in the big hotels or anything like that.

We were staying in the tiny little hotels or sometimes in people's homes.

And that put you in amongst the communities that you were reporting on.

And that was crucial and taught me a really good lesson.

You know, it's Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori this week, right?

And so, you know, that beautiful whakatauke.

What's the most important thing in the world?

I didn't know that whakatauki at the time, but it's been a pillar of how I report on things.
