It's about people, and people are the most important thing.

The hardest thing during that whole time, and I went on for another decade and a half of reporting from at least a dozen conflicts around the world, often on long stretches as well, and the hardest thing was not to get depressed and dark, and I saw that.

happened to a lot of my colleagues uh from overseas you know it it it just burns you out but the thing that i i i loved about telling those stories and love's probably the wrong word but um was the light you'd get from some of the the people that you talk to and and how they cope with that adversity and how they you know live their lives and um and and that's the great thing i was never interested in the you know the warm machinery and all that you know all that stuff it was how people responded

Yeah, well, I know there'll be plenty of shifters out there who probably weren't even born when 9-11 happened.

And so they've known nothing other than the fact that, you know, you have to go through these protocols and airport security and that kind of thing.

But, you know, that's a small part of what's changed for our world.

I mean, you look at Homeland Security, which came to creation in the United States last

you know, the anti-terrorism, the intelligence gathering, you know, which we're part of here in New Zealand with Five Eyes, you know, all of that stuff ramped up.

You saw the abuse of that with black sites and Guantanamo Bay and torture and some of the, you know, like you can see some unspeakable things that human beings do to humans.

It's just, it's shocking.

But I guess from all of that has come this realisation that, you know,

Nowhere's safe.

And I remember at the time of 9-11, Helen Clark, the Prime Minister, said, well, geographically, we're probably fine.

We're a long way away from being a terrorist target.

But all the other things that come into being with something like that event, the Islamophobia, for instance, which you've got to say was behind it.

The Christchurch mosque attacks, well, we're not immune to these attacks.

We're part of a global society now that faces them all the time, and they may not be planes flying into buildings, but there are things like cyber security and all these other attacks that are happening constantly around the world to try and disrupt our way of life.

That was a bit sobering too, wasn't it?
