SpaceX needs money to take on these wild ambitions that Elon Musk has, including data centers in space, a colony on Mars, trying to get its Starship rocket, which is sort of the bigger version that it's been trying to successfully launch and has not succeeded about a dozen times.
It needs to finally get that.
There's a lot of business riding on getting that
into the air successfully.
And so there's a need for cash.
The company has generated significant profits, but now Elon Musk is investing that into his AI company, into building a chip factory.
Those are all expensive ventures.
Certainly.
I mean, the bulk of the business is still SpaceX and it's still serving space launches for Elon Musk's Starlink business, which is also within SpaceX, and trips to the International Space Station for NASA and putting satellites and other devices into the air for other companies.
Anthropic and OpenAI are two of the bigger IPOs that are potential for this year.
And we know that Elon Musk is not a fan of Sam Altman.
The two could be going to trial later this month unless they settle.
They're trying to figure out who's going to be first.
OpenAI has a complicated corporate structure that's going to take a while to work out and get all that paperwork together.
And so Elon is seizing the opportunity and trying to sort of be the first to market and take advantage of the investor interest that might come with that.
Iran made a similar threat a couple of weeks ago.
I mean, they have followed through in some ways.
There have been several Amazon data centers for its web services business, which customers include the U.S.
military that have been hit reportedly by Iranian drones.
It is not unheard of for these tech companies to become threats because they are so closely intertwined now with the military.
