But I digress.
I did text with the mayor of Arlington Heights, Jim Tenaglia, and he's pretty close to the vest.
But my read from our conversation was, no, they did not do this with these mayors.
And he seemed very cold to this idea because, like you said, they had a deal.
They had a deal.
where they were going to do this payment in lieu of taxes.
They would pay a fraction of what their property taxes would be, but there would be money there for the schools and for the government.
Now, as you mentioned, zero property taxes on that stadium, although we should say the rest of the megaproject, they build a hotel or housing or whatever, they would have to pay property tax on that.
But here's another caveat here.

Deeply into this bill, the Bears have to finance the building of the stadium and then turn it over to the public and then lease it.
I mean, that's a strange arrangement to me, but apparently that is done.
But they are allowed to get help with local taxes.
There is nothing in this bill that says that the local municipality can't help them out with their upfront financing costs.
So now we have a race to the bottom.
Arlington Heights, Chicago, the state's not going to chip in, but maybe the local hotel tax, maybe the local tax on gaming or amusement tax.
We can help you out.
Yeah, you could argue that this is going to be worse for taxpayers because there absolutely will have to be taxpayer skin in the game here.
And so now it's leaving it up to the mayors.
And this is why I suspect Mayor Tenali in Arlington Heights is pretty cool to this idea, because now the mayor, the bears are going to be like, OK, what do you got for us?
