That's when I knew.

He'd come up from the south, from the direction of the spring, which meant he'd circled the camp instead of coming in straight.
He was carrying an armload of dry oak split into stove lengths, maybe 40 pounds of wood.
He had a rifle on a sling over his right shoulder, muzzled down, a bolt action with a synthetic stock, dark gray, scoped.
Working man's rifle.
