I was one month old when my parents fled the fighting.
And where did you go from there?
So we went across the border to Pakistan where millions of refugees had fled before us.
That was really one of the only pathways to safety at that time.
So we went to Peshawar, Pakistan.
I was around two and a half years old when my family moved to the United States.
Yes.
Yes, my memories do start in the U.S., in Virginia, where I grew up.
But having said that, my family's story and where we came from and who we were was very much a part of my childhood and, you know, youth and adulthood, all of that.
It was so important for my family, like it was for so many other families that had immigrated or who were refugees before.
In the US and Canada and across Europe at that time to kind of retain as much of their heritage and their values and their culture as possible.
And that was certainly true for my family as well.
You know, it's very interesting because I think, and I think this is a situation for the children of so many immigrants, is that it's a very tough thing to kind of grow up in that way where you are between two worlds.
So there was definitely a sense that we were Afghan.
However, having, like, as I said earlier, my first memories of that,
being of the U.S.
and English being the stronger language among the two languages that we spoke.
And, you know, living in the United States, obviously you felt very American as well.
I think it's absolutely a source of tension as they grow older, I think.
