I think those tensions and those fault lines definitely arise.

I think that within, if you are part of a community and then even within that community, part of this family or the smaller subset, I want to say, of people who are determined at all costs to really adhere to certain values, then yes, it is much more difficult.

There is always a sense of having to be worthy of the values or of the sacrifices of your parents.

I think that's true for both boys and girls of immigrants and refugee children.

However, I think for girls within such communities, there is the added value.

burden of having to carry the family name, of having to carry the family honour, of knowing that you're responsible for your family's status within that community.

Yes, that was in 2009.

There had been a story in the news in Canada about an honour crime.

A family that was charged and then later convicted of carrying out the honour killings of three of their daughters and another female family member.

And I began following that story, as did many people here in Canada.

And I should say before that, back in my college days, I had some academic research experience because I had done an undergraduate thesis on honor killings in Jordan and the attempt by the government to deter the perpetrators by making the penalties much harsher.

So I had some research or I had done research on honor crimes and honor killings in Central Asia and in the Middle East during the course of

doing that thesis.

So I had some knowledge of the subject.

And of course I had also grown up, you know, within a family that while I was very privileged and fortunate that my parents were very encouraging of me going out and forging my own identity and had a great reverence for education and encouraged me to go out and achieve as much as I could.
