First of all, I didn't discover Winnie the Pooh.
I mean, Winnie the Pooh wasn't something that was around when I was a child.
So...
I discovered Winnie the Pooh really when I was about 25 and I was starting to teach and I discovered Winnie the Pooh.
I learned a lot of lessons from Mel.
Like, you know, in a children's book, regardless of the age, really up to about 12, you can talk about anything, but you must leave them with hope.
You cannot write a story, in my opinion, you can't write a story for the under 12s that ends in despair.
I mean, you can do that for adults, but you can't do it for children.
And I think Aidan Millen showed us that, that you can look at dark topics, but you must always come back to hope.
I love, as well, Ciara, I love his humour.
I just love that he's so funny.
And I try to put a lot of humour in my own picture books, because I just think it's a great thing to share with children.
And also, Millen taught me one other thing.
When I write picture books now at the moment, and...
They always say, you know, the person who's reading the picture book often is not the child.
It's an adult.
So if you want an adult to read something over and over and over again, you have to give them the odd nod, the odd wink.
And with Milne, he does it in spades.
Some of the characters, you know, are really just a satirical look at adults that we all know.
owl who you know sees himself as very well read and uses a lot of big words that don't mean anything but he it's that idea of somebody you know like a bureaucrat somebody very pompous children find it funny because they don't know that side of it we find it funny because we know someone like that
