And we begin tonight's show with the remarkable discovery of rare Neolithic tombs in Galway.
Archaeologists from the University of Galway have uncovered what appears to be the only known example in Ireland where a court tomb and a portal tomb stand side by side, dating back almost 6,000 years.
Alongside the monuments are remarkable discoveries, including stone tools, cremated bone, and a unique
Amethyst pendant.
The project is led by Dr.
Michelle Comer and Dr.
Noel McCarthy, who both lecture in archaeology at the University of Galway, and it's an excavation in the Marie area of Galway, and it reveals two different types of megalithic tombs.

What are we trying to do with Marray land use through time?
And when you chose this area, were you expecting discoveries of this scale?
Michelle, tell me about the discoveries, these two tombs, and what does it mean to have the tombs beside each other?
And it allows us to go back in time almost six thousand years and it shows that perhaps different traditions may have coexisted or interacted and it has an awful lot to say about identity and belief and ritual and even how neighbouring communities express themselves.
And it is very interesting the way you describe them as the first farmers because it is that is a dramatic find and it shows just how important uh what was going on uh is to our understanding of of Irish farming, Irish traditions and those transitions.
