And that's why they were so prized by monarchs and the elite.
Well, my thanks to Dr. Jose Maria Moreno-Madrid, a researcher at the University of Limerick School of History and Geography, for joining me tonight to share this remarkable story.
Well, that does bring us to the end of another edition of Talking History.
My thanks to my producer, Moraes O'Sullivan, for bringing everything together.
We have more debate and discussion next week, so I hope you can join us then.
We've been talking history.
Good night.
Talking History with Patrick Gagin.
This is News Talk.
Good evening and welcome.
We're Talking History on Newstalk 106 to 108 with me, Patrick Gagan.
In tonight's show, we're going in search of the judges in Ireland in the years before independence.
We'll find out about a party like no other as we explore the history of the masquerade.
And to end the show, the rise and fall of Japan's most controversial World War II general.
And you can send us your thoughts and comments to talkinghistoryatnewstalk.com.
And we begin tonight's show with the judges in Ireland and a new book by Dara Hogan, which explores how the Irish judiciary changed in those crucial decades before Irish independence.
The book is called The Judges of Ireland, 1866 to 1921.
It's published in hardback by Four Courts Press in association or in partnership with the Irish Legal History Society.
And Dara, you're very welcome to the show.
Thank you, Patrick.
