So tell us about The Masquerade.
Tell us what it was, when was its heyday, and why was it such a cultural obsession?
And Heidegger is a fascinating figure, this Swiss émigré, an impresario.
And the chapter heading is called He's the Ugliest Man in London.
And it's really quite remarkable the way he's able to create and commercialise this and blend all the different elements to create something that people want to pay to go to.
Scandal and controversy becomes associated with the masquerades from a fairly early stage.
How did they become such a source of controversy and why was there such concern about sin and depravity?
some remarkable women and some remarkable characters in the book.
And there's one woman, Elizabeth Chudley, and some of the outfits that she wears are quite imaginative and interesting.
And her whole life and career is fascinating.
What I love about the book is that you show this isn't just harmless entertainment.
Actually, there's an awful lot going here in terms of who's taking part and that beneath the glamour, there's issues there about class and empire and gender and race and power.
