So that it's actually a very interesting way and a very significant way of getting our insights into this world of the 18th century.
If you had a time machine and was able to go back to the world of the masquerades and you attended one, do you think you would be horrified by the vulgarity and what was on show?
Or do you think you'd have the best night of your life seeing all of this in reality?
Or how do you think you would react to it?
Well, it's called The Masquerade, A History of Extravagance and Intrigue.
It's published in hardback by Yale University Press.
The author is Megan Kobza.
And Megan, thank you so much for joining us tonight.
We'll be back with more Talking History on News Talk right after this, as we find out about General Tojo and Japan and the Second World War.
So stay with us here on News Talk.
Welcome back.
We're Talking History.
The military general who became Emperor Hirohito's prime minister, Hideki Tojo, is most often remembered as an iron-fisted leader who dragged Japan into World War II and, after spectacular losses, was eventually executed as a war criminal.
Yet Tojo was far more than his ignominious end.
And in fact, as a new book argues, he was one of the 20th century's most accomplished military statesmen.
The book is called Tojo, the Rise and Fall of Japan's Most Controversial World War II General.
The book is published in hardback by the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press.
The author is Peter Moak.
And Peter, you're very welcome to the show.
Thank you very much for having me, Patrick.
