And then there are

different and conflicting views about how best to address the challenge of slavery, and whether that's by remaining as part of the British Empire or seeking independence.

And to what extent, Cathy, would you see this as a civil war as well as a conflict between an emerging nation and an existing power?

Stephanie, I agree with you completely about the Gettysburg Address.

And if tonight's show was in some future point for the 250th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, I think it would be a celebration.

It's a profound text.

It's a remarkable achievement and it's such a huge impact.

But I don't feel the same for the declaration.

And partly it's because maybe...

the way it's being celebrated, perhaps uncritically in an uncomplicated way, and perhaps because of the current occupants of the White House, or perhaps because there are all of those tensions that are unresolved in 1776 and for many decades afterwards.

And it's problematic, but it's perhaps problematic in a way that isn't always recognised or appreciated.

We have an absolutely stellar panel of experts, Professor Stephanie McCurry of Columbia University, Professor Elijah Gould, who's an

a leading expert on the American Revolution.

He's currently the Harmsworth Professor of American History at the Queen's College at the University of Oxford and he's Professor of History at the University of New Hampshire.

And Professor Kathleen Burke, who's a Meritor Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at University College London and who is an internationally acclaimed expert on Anglo-American relations, finance and foreign policy.
