He has shown himself to be a quality, competent two-way winger.

As I said, this is a player that you are making a bet on, and if you are making a bet on the player, it's because you believe in them, not because you're taking a cap down.
This isn't some weird world where you're trying to dump off a bad contract on the erstwhile Arizona Coyotes.
This is a guy that you are saying, we think he can be a better player than he's been here, but he needs a fresh start.
We cannot provide the fresh start because it doesn't work here, but it will work in wherever.
So, yeah, like you hold out, you say there is value in this player, even if we're willing to retain, there is value in this player.
And you will get a huge advantage if this player pans out with that retention, if that's how it has to work.
