And even if a religion doesn't believe in an afterlife, they believe that the divine can be known by doing the right things, believing the right things, and practicing the right things.
And there's plenty of Christians who think this way about their faith, even though it's not what Jesus taught.
At the end of the day, if you have a religious view of the world, the idea that the way to God is just by being obedient, walking up the road, walking up the path, well, if you believe that, you will never be transformed yourself.
You'll either trick yourself into thinking that you succeeded and become a proud, self-righteous, judgmental, religious person, or you'll fail and you'll become an insecure, ashamed, lost religious person.
Neither option is what Jesus had in mind because Jesus couldn't be more clear.
There is no road to God.
There is no path you can walk or action you can take to achieve his love or to reach his summits.
Your feet cannot take you on that path.
No, you must be carried by someone else.
You must be carried by a person.
And the only person who can do that is Jesus.
He is the way.
He is the truth.
He is the life.
Far from being an exclusive claim, it's the most inclusive claim in religious history because Jesus will carry anyone on his stretcher.
He will carry the self-righteous and the shameful.
He will carry the successful and the failure.
He will carry the upright and the sinful.
He will carry anyone because no one can reach the Father without him.
So the path to God and the path to Jesus himself is almost offensively simple.
