I'm Patrick Miller.
John Penrose was a parish clerk in the 1600s in a small village outside of London.
He was unfortunate enough to face the last great wave of the bubonic plague in 1655.
The local rector, basically a pastor, gave him an incredibly important task, delivering medicine and supplies for the sick and then caring for them.
At first, John helped, but as the piles of corpses began to mount, his fears got the best of him.
The stench and the decay of the rot made him sick, and so he packed his belongings, abandoned his posts, and that meant that the sick people in his town, they didn't have medicine or the support they needed, and the plague would spread further.
He camped out in the nearby woods until the plague passed, and much to his own delight, he survived.
But when he came back home, he found a gruesome scene.
His wife and children had all died of the plague without him.
