He spent the rest of his life wandering, a recluse.
He wrote in diaries that he fled from suffering because he believed it would make him safe, keep him happy, and protect him from the rot.

So in the story, a group of Gentiles come to visit Jesus, and he takes this as a sign that the day of his death is approaching.
