Why?
Because the Old Testament prophesied that when the Messiah came, people from all nations would come to learn from him.
Now, that's exactly what's happening in this story.
And before it can fully happen, before the Gentiles can fully come in, something else must happen first.
Jesus says that he must be glorified first.
But then the next line holds a twist because his glorification is not an enthronement, but his death.
He later says in verse 31, Now the prince of this world will be driven out, and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw people to myself.
Again, this verse is steeped in irony.
When we hear lifted up, we think of a king ascending his throne.
But when Jesus says it, he's imagining himself being nailed to a cross and hoisted into the air.
And there, dying, suffering a terrible death, not just physically, but spiritually drinking the wrath of God, there on that cross, he would be enthroned and draw all the nations to God.
There, he would be glorified.
As he said earlier, he will be like a seed that falls into the ground and dies so that it might produce many seeds.
Tell me a man's relationship to suffering and I will tell you who that man is.
Jesus continues, now my soul is troubled and what shall I say?
Father, save me from this hour?
No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
Father, glorify your name.
Jesus doesn't minimize the pain.
I want you to notice that.
