It's more expensive for them to buy them and they can't pass that whole cost along.
So that's been a really big financial strain on these meatpacking companies who really over the last year have lost hundreds of millions, even billions of dollars.
It's hard to understate how important that plant has been.
It really defines the town.
Like when you think of Lexington, it is a meatpacking town, the largest employer, and it's where, you know, the city draws most of its tax base from.
Without it, you're going to have thousands of people who are expected to be out of work.
You have even businesses that are
not connected to the plant.
Think of all the restaurants, the trucking companies that hauled things in and out of the plant or moved the cattle from some of the neighboring ranches and feed yards.
All of these things are interconnected in that same area around Lexington.
Yeah, so the people my colleague and I talk to, we see a lot of people really kind of scrambling, trying to find jobs.
So we see people trying to look for new jobs either in Lexington or really the surrounding communities.
Just about 90 miles east, there is another massive meatpacking facility owned by Tyson rival JBS.
They're going to pick up some people.
You have a new beef packing plant in North Platte, Nebraska.
They said they got 100 applications the next day.
These are people who rely on, you know, in some cases, paycheck to paycheck.
They're really just trying to look where they can immediately find work to support their family over the coming months.
It's hard to say exactly what it will look like.
