In a comparable meatpacking town I talked to once, it was a town of about 20,000 people.

When they shut down a similar size plant, they lost 2,000 people of their total population.

I think one of the other things that's interesting is we don't really know what's going to happen to the facility yet.

Tyson has said that they are exploring ways to kind of repurpose it now as a case-ready facility.

Basically, they take cuts from other meat plants and

prepare them for packaging at the grocery store.

That usually requires a far smaller workforce than the 3,200 people that were at Lexington, usually around a couple hundred.

So you would save some jobs.

You might keep a little bit of the facility operating, but it won't even be close to what it used to be.

Some industry officials have said that, yeah, there could be another big meatpacking plant to close somewhere else in the U.S.

This is going to go on for at least two more years just because of how long it takes the biological clock of a cow.

So it's how long can they put up with these losses?

I don't know.

So Lexington might not be the only town to feel this.
