it's likely that in working with a financial planner, your own financial education will improve over time.
And so that only happens through you asking questions and clarifying, right?
So first of all, feel comfortable asking the questions, I suppose.
A good question to ask would be, look, are my goals achievable?
Because we're just doing some work on a job at the moment and presenting it next week, someone who wants to retire at 55 and a certain amount of income that they want, et cetera, et cetera.
And
We've crunched the numbers and we just can't say that that's going to work.
They need to work longer.
There's a few other levers we can pull, but essentially the answer is no.
So again, the starting point with financial planning is, all right, what are your objectives?
How are we going to get you there?
So you want to ask the planner, if you come in and sort of, this is what I'm thinking and I want to quit my job and work two days a week so that I can freelance, blah, blah, blah.
They might need to do some calculations.
But a pretty good starting point is, look, is this realistic or am I totally dreaming here?
Because that's pretty useful.
Otherwise, you could waste years of time trying to pursue something that just won't work.
And, of course, nine times out of ten, in my experience, most people are pretty realistic.
It's usually totally doable.
But you want to clarify that.
Probably another good question might be just whether they've helped anyone in a similar circumstance.
