It's certainly less likely to happen if they're going to have to make really big mortgage payments, let alone balloon payments to avoid losing their homes.
A group of progressive Democrats, including Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, also introduced a rent and mortgage cancellation act on April 17th that would just issue a blanket cancellation of rent and home mortgage payments through the duration of the coronavirus pandemic.
The bill, it says, would constitute a full payment of forgiveness with no accumulation of debt
for renters or homeowners and no negative impact on their credit rating or rental history.
So that is kind of what the left side of the party is pushing.
The indications that I've gotten from Republicans are that they would not be amenable to that proposal.
The coronavirus pandemic is not only affecting people who own their own homes, it's also affecting people who own homes and then rent them out.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that May is shaping up as a clash between renters and landlords as high unemployment could leave millions of people unable to pay their rent.
Some activists are organizing rent strikes and landlords are also in a pinch because many of them have mortgages to pay.
In some cases, landlords might be able to get forbearance from the mortgages on their rental properties.
In other cases, it might be more difficult.
It might be a case-by-case negotiation with the bank.
Regardless, interest in principle on your home loan isn't the only cost that you incur as an owner of a property, be it your own residence or a rental property.
So landlords also have property taxes to pay.
They might have condo fees or things like that.
And forbearance generally doesn't cover those things.
So landlords are incurring costs regardless of whether they can get forbearance on their mortgage or regardless of whether their renters are paying.
And so the tension between tenants and their landlords is just going to increase.
