I can't.
I mean, to be honest, we didn't often come here when I was a child.
Right.
But I have a huge sense of, you know, I was born in 54.
So the festival having happened just before.
So when I was young, you know, my mother would talk about the festival.
It was this huge event that had happened kind of before I arrived on the scene.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm sure, absolutely.
And I was sitting here thinking how much the arc of my parents' lives and careers kind of, in a way, echoed that of the country, if you like, and the design culture of the country.
Because for them, the festival and the Royal Festival Hall was a sort of breakthrough moment, really.
And that surely is how it was for certainly the design and art and cultural and scientific fraternity in the UK.
Yes.
There was, though actually they had to wait, you know, pretty much a decade for their opportunity because they both trained at the Royal College of Art in the late 30s.
My mother graduated in 1940.
They stepped out into the world with this vision of being freelance designers, but absolutely no possibility.
I mean, into the war, into lack of materials, lack of opportunity, and also austerity.
I mean, I think you're right, the sort of reaction against...
or the liberation from fascism in the 30s, but also just from the austerity, from the hardship, from the slog, from the visual monotony, from the limitations in every respect of the war experience.
