I think a lot about something that's not usually in the top 10 thing people talk about, but it's self-driving vehicles.
Easy to be freaked out by them.
They actually have enormous potential to save lives.
That's just one example of how we could be better off if we responsibly develop these technologies.
But if we don't, I'll tell you what I think could happen.
And I come at this based on where I grew up, right?
I'm from the industrial Midwest, Northern Indiana, a place dominated by the auto industry.
And starting in the 60s, but definitely in the 90s when I was growing up in the early 2000s, there was a huge amount of job loss because the economy was changing.
What happened was there were a whole lot of people who didn't just lose their jobs.
Often they would lose their jobs, maybe find another job, maybe be trained to find a new career even, but never recovered their sense of identity.
You're an auto worker, you're in a tool and dye shop, and it's your whole sense of belonging revolves around your job, not just your paycheck.
It's how your spouses know each other from the union picnic.
It's how you're sponsoring Little League.
It's what you explain, you know, at least in the U.S.,
We don't even say like, what's your job?
We say, what do you do?
Right?
What we mean is what do you do professionally?
But we say, what do you do?
Basically as a way of saying, who are you?
