And that's where we've got to make sure that the American people own enough of this, or at least own enough of the value that's being created, that people's needs can be met.
How?
Well, there's a lot of ways you can do it.
I think some version of a dividend makes sense.
What I mean by that is there's some public share.
We can argue about whether it should come with like a vote, like being on a board, or whether it's kind of closer to a tax.
By the way, I think this is also a fair game.
I mean, these things trained on data that all of us put in the world for free.
These things are based on the internet, which was created by the American taxpayer, basically free of charge in the 1960s when DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, created what became the internet.
And now it's time to return more of that to the American people.
If we do that, we really could have a shorter work week and more money in our pocket.
But there's a big but here, which is...
It hasn't always worked out that way with labor-saving technology.
A hundred years ago, the economist John Maynard Keynes wrote an essay called Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren.
He wrote this in 1930, and it was all about what the world would be like a hundred years from then, so 2030.
And he predicts that the productivity of our economy, because of automation, technology, all these things, will go up something like five to eightfold.
And because of that,
Really, we're not going to have to work more than 10 or 15 hours a week.
And so far, we are on track to almost perfectly match his prediction about productivity.
But we're nowhere close to that.
