I will say there's a lot of different ways you can get a billion dollars.
And right now the easiest way to get a billion dollars is to have $10 billion and do nothing.
You know, the thing we most admire about the entrepreneur is that they work hard and they do things and they make things, right?
And they generate value.
And I think most Americans don't spite you the value that you get from having created even more value.
I think at the same time, we see a lot of outcomes in the market that seem to be about just like money just sort of happening to whoever already has money.
Many of them have seen their wealth go up like tenfold in the last few years.
way more than how much their wealth went up in the few years before that.
So I guess like the thing you did between zero and a billion in my experience is usually much more impressive than whatever you did between 1 billion and 10 or 10 and 100 or 100 and 500.
And I think we are in a political system where it would just be so naive to think
that the amount that the market gives you is just purely equal to the amount of benefit that you create or the amount of hard work that you put in.
Some people work hard and they earn a lot.
And some people don't do shit and they wind up with a lot.
And I don't think people would be as angry about billionaires as they are if there weren't millions of people whose story is closer to that of your mom.
And it brings me back to this idea of the American dream where, you know, it's supposed to be the case that generally you come out ahead.
If you, as the saying goes, you work hard and you play by the rules.
And that definitely happens sometimes, but it doesn't happen enough now.
And most importantly, it happens less in America than in certain other countries.
And it happens less in America than it used to in America.
And those two things are the big blinking alarm lights to me.
